SUICIDE PREVENTION PROGRAMS, EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY | AMERICAN FOUNDATION FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION - NEBRASKA CHAPTER

Focuses on eliminating the loss of life from suicide by delivering innovative prevention programs, educating the public about risk factors and warning signs, raising funds for suicide research and programs, and reaching out to those individuals who have lost someone to suicide.

DISABILITY AND MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES | CROSS MENTAL HEALTH REGION

Provides the County Rural Offices of Social Services, which works to improve health, hope, and successful outcomes for the adults in the region who have a chronic mental illness, intellectual disability or developmental disability. Support services are offered for those who are disabled. The County Rural Offices of Social Services is the only place to complete an enrollment packet for the disability program. A service coordinator will schedule an intake interview within 10 days of receiving contact for assistance to assess service and support needs.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID COURSES | NORTH CENTRAL BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SYSTEMS

Offers an 8-hour course that teaches how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training provides the skills needed to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing and mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.

Also offers a course designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Topics include depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.

MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATIONS | NAMI NORTHEAST IOWA

Provides educational classes about mental illness for families, for adults living with a mental illness, and for the general public. NAMI provides support resources for family members and individuals affected by mental illness and provides advocacy training to help the public work to improve mental health resources.

NAMI also works to improve current laws, legislation and promotes research. This is a locally led affiliate of NAMI Iowa and the national NAMI organization.

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES | LINN COUNTY OFFICES

Provides crisis care for people experiencing a mental health or substance use disorder crisis that requires immediate attention. Services include mental health, psychiatric and substance abuse screenings, crisis stabilization (evaluation and treatment for those that need observation for a more thorough evaluation), counseling services and care coordination through key service providers.

Patients can also be brought in with loved ones or come on their own. Use of Mental Health Access Center services is 100 percent voluntary.

MENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION | NAMI CENTRAL IOWA

NAMI Central Iowa's primary missions are to SUPPORT people affected by mental illness, EDUCATE with facts about mental health topics, and ADVOCATE for mental health concerns.

NAMI Peer-to-Peer | a free, 8-session course for adults living with mental illness (diagnosed or undiagnosed).
NAMI Family-to-Family | a free, 8-session course for family, significant others, and friends of adults living with mental illness.
NAMI Basics | a free 6-session group education program for parents or family caregivers of children and teens experiencing symptoms of mental illness or already diagnosed.
Iowa State University NAMI on Campus | a free, mental health student group providing education and awareness resources.
NAMI on Campus at Grinnell | a free, metal health student group providing education and awareness resources at Grinnell College led by adults impacted by mental illness.

Every NAMI signature program is free to those we serve.

NAMI Support Groups: Meet weekly providing support for adults living with mental illness and also for the family members caring for their loved one.
NAMI Educational Courses: Offered 3 to 4 times per year for the adult living with mental illness and for the family member or friend who wants to learn how to support their loved one.
NAMI public presentations: courageous adults living in recovery share their mental illness journey with the public.
NAMI Ending the Silence is for junior high and high schools,
NAMI In Our Own Voice is for the general public.
The Mental Health Wellness Center is located in Ames and is a peer-led drop-in center offering a stigma free environment of support. If you are in need of local resources, NAMI Central Iowa is here to help.

YOUTH CRISIS INTERVENTION AND MOBILE CRISIS TEAM SERVICES | FOCUSS INC.

Provides 24 hour on-call and in-person crisis services for youth in Polk County. Crisis Responders provide assessments, interventions, and stabilization services in a public or community location for youth (ages 17 and under) who are experiencing crises such as: suicide ideation, substance use disorders, exposure to violence, and other behavioral and mental health situations.

Other services include counseling, mental health evaluations and suicide prevention services.
